Coroner: Patrick McKendry dies in Bakersfield pedestrian crash CA

BAKERSFIELD, CA, (April 17, 2026) – A 72-year-old man was killed Friday evening in a pedestrian crash in northeast Bakersfield, police said.

The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Patrick Harold McKendry of Bakersfield. Authorities said McKendry had just exited a bus in the 5600 block of Auburn Street near Tartan Place shortly after 7 p.m. when he entered the roadway and was struck by an eastbound vehicle.

McKendry was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver remained at the location following the crash.

The Bakersfield Police Department continues to investigate the incident.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Despite ongoing safety campaigns, pedestrian fatalities on U.S. roads remain at concerning levels. Many of these incidents could be prevented if drivers remain attentive at all times.

Approximately 2,304 pedestrians were struck and killed on U.S. roadways in the first half of 2024, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).

“In many cases, pedestrians have the right of way when crossing a street or intersection, even if a marked crosswalk is not present,” said Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized that an independent investigation by an experienced attorney is crucial to protect the rights of a victim’s family in cases like this.

She added that roadway conditions, visibility of signage, and lighting at the scene are all important factors that must be carefully evaluated.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is generally the responsibility of drivers to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of Patrick Harold McKendry may be entitled to a wrongful death claim.

Family members of wrongful death victims may pursue compensation for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a tragic accident.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure families into accepting quick settlements that may not reflect the full value of the claim,” Formica noted. “An attorney will strongly advocate on behalf of their client to ensure fair treatment and appropriate compensation.”
