Passenger killed in Bates County Jeep crash; Orlando Solis Held

BATES, MO (July 13, 2026) — A passenger was killed and the driver was arrested on DWI-related charges following a single-vehicle crash Monday afternoon in Bates County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Investigators said a Jeep was traveling eastbound on Missouri Route 52 when it left the roadway near County Road 3502 at approximately 1:39 p.m. The vehicle overturned and struck a tree.

A 35-year-old Arizona woman riding as a passenger died at the scene.

The driver, identified as Orlando Solis, 37, of San Luis, Arizona, was arrested and charged with DWI causing the death of another person.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal crash.

DWI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Despite continued enforcement efforts across the country, impaired drivers remain a serious threat to innocent motorists and passengers.

The consumption of alcohol can significantly impair a driver’s ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. Drivers under the influence may experience reduced judgment, impaired vision, diminished coordination, and slower reaction times.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about 37 people die in drunk-driving crashes each day, and approximately 32% of all U.S. traffic fatalities involve drivers with a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of .08 or higher.

An independent investigation may be necessary to determine additional contributing factors, including blood-alcohol content levels.

Candice Bond, an experienced DUI accident attorney, offered her perspective on crashes of this nature.

“Separate from any criminal charges, a victim’s family may have the right to seek compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “In addition to the work performed by law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview key witnesses, examine available surveillance footage, and obtain phone and texting records when appropriate. Serving as an advocate, legal counsel can help protect a victim’s rights while working to hold impaired drivers accountable.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of the passenger may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic accident.

“The stress and sorrow can be be overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face during this difficult time, and protecting their legal rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will remain informed about the official investigation and help safeguard the family’s best interests.”
