Passenger Christopher Rhoton killed after stop sign failure Nacogdoches crash

NACOGDOCHES, TX, (April 18, 2026) – Two Nacogdoches men were killed and another person was injured Saturday morning in a two-vehicle crash at a county intersection, according to authorities.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that a northbound Toyota Corolla traveling on FM 941 failed to yield at a stop sign at approximately 9:54 a.m. The vehicle entered the path of a GMC Canyon traveling northeast on U.S. 59, resulting in a collision.

Christopher Rhoton, 18, of Nacogdoches, who was a passenger in the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene along with the Toyota’s driver. The driver of the GMC Canyon sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the Federal Highway Administration, nearly 40 percent of traffic collisions occur at intersections, with many involving drivers running stop signs or traffic signals. Common contributing factors include impatience, distracted driving, and reckless behavior.

Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, emphasized that independent investigations are crucial to protect the rights of victims and their families.

“It is essential to determine the exact cause of these types of accidents. An attorney has the resources to review insurance coverage, retain expert witnesses, conduct background checks, and locate witnesses. We carefully guide families through this process,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

She added that timely investigation is critical to preserve evidence.

“In addition to the police report, an attorney will closely evaluate all contributing factors to the crash,” Bond said. “Legal counsel can hire experts, review insurance policies, locate witnesses, and ensure a thorough investigation that supports the pursuit of justice.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the results of the investigation, the family of Christopher Rhoton may pursue a wrongful death claim. Survivors of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident such as this.

Bond noted, “Grieving families are often overwhelmed by the legal process involved in protecting their rights. An attorney can provide compassionate guidance during this difficult time and help ensure that those left behind receive the compensation they are entitled to.”
