BUFFALO GROVE, IL, (April 21, 2026) – A security guard who was critically injured earlier this week in a crash outside Buffalo Grove High School has died, authorities said.
Police identified the victim as Orlando Rivas, who was hurt around 3:20 p.m. Tuesday when a vehicle exiting the school parking lot struck a pole that subsequently fell on him.
According to officials and family members, Rivas was attempting to shield students as they were leaving school at the time of the incident. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and was transported to a hospital, where he later died on Friday.
Rivas was remembered as a dedicated and hardworking individual who supported his family, including four children.
The incident remains under investigation.
