Elderly couple O’Neal and Martha Kelley killed in Cullman truck collision

CULLMAN, AL, (April 13, 2026) – An elderly couple from Arab was killed Sunday evening in a crash involving a tractor-trailer in Cullman County.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Highway Patrol Division, the crash occurred around 6:15 p.m. on Alabama 91 near Cullman County Road 649, approximately six miles east of Holly Pond.

Authorities said O’Neal Kelley, 84, was driving when his vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, 79-year-old Martha Kelley, sustained critical injuries and was transported to a hospital, where she later died.

The crash remains under investigation, and no additional information has been released.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Alabama recorded 148 fatal crashes involving large trucks in 2022, the most recent year with finalized data.

Nationally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 40,901 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2023, marking the second straight year of declining fatalities. While detailed Alabama injury figures for large-truck crashes in 2023 have yet to be released, available data continues to highlight that crashes involving heavy vehicles remain a serious safety concern, particularly on rural highways with significant tractor-trailer traffic.

Candice Bond, an experienced tractor-trailer accident attorney, stated that in cases like this, it is crucial to have an independent investigation conducted in a timely manner to safeguard victims’ rights.

“Crashes involving tractor-trailers are often complicated, with multiple contributing factors,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“An experienced attorney can help protect victims from trucking companies, which often deploy their own investigators and resources to defend negligent drivers.

“A lawyer can advocate on behalf of victims by hiring expert witnesses, reviewing driver histories, identifying witnesses, and examining insurance coverage, while guiding clients through the legal process.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family of O’Neal and Martha Kelley may pursue compensation for damages such as costs associated with the death, loss of income and companionship, and other hardships.

“A fatal accident involving a loved one is deeply tragic and devastating for any family. The emotional toll, including grief and shock, can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

He added, “Beyond the emotional impact, the loss of a family member can also create serious financial strain. Loss of income and funeral expenses alone can have significant consequences for surviving relatives.”
