DPS: One killed, Michael Proa injured in Lubbock County collision

LUBBOCK, TX, (April 24, 2026) – A two-vehicle crash Friday morning near Idalou in Lubbock County left one person dead and another injured, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The collision occurred at the intersection of U.S. Highway 62/82 and North County Road 3000.

Authorities said a 26-year-old Lubbock resident was traveling southbound on County Road 3000 and approached the intersection controlled by a stop sign. At the same time, a vehicle driven by 55-year-old Michael Charles Proa was traveling westbound on U.S. 62/82.

Investigators reported that the 26-year-old driver pulled into the intersection in front of Proa’s vehicle, leading to a collision. The 26-year-old driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Proa was transported to University Medical Center in Lubbock with moderate injuries.

The incident remains under investigation by DPS officials.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Every year, millions are injured in U.S. traffic crashes—many with life-altering consequences. Approximately 2.2 million people were injured in motor vehicle accidents in 2023 across the country, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

While authorities continue to investigate the cause and liability of this crash, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized the importance of an independent investigation.

“In addition to the thorough work of law enforcement, an attorney can revisit the scene, re-interview key witnesses, review surveillance footage, and obtain crucial phone and texting records of the parties involved,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Acting as an advocate, an attorney can help guide an injured victim through a challenging time while ensuring their legal rights and best interests are fully protected.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, Michael Charles Proa may have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, explained that the aftermath of a serious injury can place significant stress on victims, affecting their family life, employment, finances, and overall well-being.

“It is important for victims to retain an attorney when pursuing a personal injury claim, as legal representation allows for effective negotiation with insurance companies,” Formica said.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure victims into accepting quick settlements that may be far below what the claim is worth. An attorney, however, will advocate strongly on behalf of their client to ensure fair compensation and proper treatment.”
