BERWYN, IL – A Chicago man faces felony charges after allegedly fleeing the scene of a fatal pedestrian crash early Saturday morning.
Berwyn Police officers responded at around 3 a.m. to the intersection of Oak Park Avenue and Windsor Avenue. A vehicle had struck a pedestrian at the location. First responders found 53-year-old Omar Sharif of Chicago with critical injuries. Emergency crews transported Sharif to MacNeal Hospital where he succumbed to injuries.
The driver fled the scene before police arrived. Berwyn detectives worked with investigators from the West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force. The team used witness accounts and surveillance footage to identify the suspect vehicle. Police located the damaged car parked at a Chicago residence.
The vehicle reportedly belonged to a 49-year-old Chicago man. The suspect contacted Berwyn Police and made incriminating statements, investigators said. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved one felony count against the driver. He faces charges for leaving the scene of a crash involving death, a Class 1 felony.
