SAN JOSE, CA, (April 21, 2026) – A tragic pedestrian accident in a San Jose apartment complex claimed the life of a young child Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 18-month-old Olivier Carmelo Sgarlata.
According to early reports, the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. along Canoas Garden Avenue near Almaden Expressway. The toddler was walking in the parking area of the complex when he was struck by a minivan operated as a privately owned taxi.
Emergency responders transported the child to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Police said the driver remained at the scene following the collision. No arrests have been reported.
Officials noted that this marks the seventh pedestrian fatality in San Jose in 2026. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
