Fatal Oakdale pedestrian crash involves Michael Santellan

OAKDALE, CA, January 14, 2026 — A pedestrian was killed early Wednesday after being struck by a vehicle along State Route 108 near Oakdale, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. Authorities said a Ford pickup truck driven by 67-year-old Michael Santellan of Modesto was traveling eastbound on Route 108 east of Langworth Road when it struck a 29-year-old man from Oakdale.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said it was not immediately known whether impairment was a factor. The crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Pedestrians continue to face significant danger on U.S. roadways, even in situations where motorists are legally required to yield. Thousands of pedestrians are killed in traffic crashes each year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 7,314 pedestrians lost their lives in traffic collisions in 2023, representing a 3.7% decrease from 2022 but still 14% higher than pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

In California, pedestrian and bicyclist deaths declined to 1,208 in 2024 after peaking at 1,429 in 2022. Los Angeles County recorded the highest number of pedestrian fatalities, with 1,622 deaths reported between 2020 and 2024.

“In most cases, pedestrians have the right of way when crossing streets or intersections, regardless of whether a crosswalk is marked,” said Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized the importance of conducting an independent investigation by an experienced attorney to help safeguard the rights of the victim’s family in fatal pedestrian cases.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family of the pedestrian killed in the crash may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“It is nearly always a motorist’s responsibility to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. “Surviving family members may pursue compensation for lost income, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a fatal or catastrophic accident.”

Formica noted that attorneys can serve as advocates for grieving families by guiding them through the legal process while protecting their rights during an extremely difficult time.

“Insurance companies frequently attempt to push families into quick settlements that do not reflect the true value of a claim,” Formica added. “An attorney will work to ensure families are treated fairly and receive appropriate compensation.”
