Norma Villegas Fatally Struck in Antioch Pedestrian Accident CA

ANTIOCH, CA, (April 17, 2026) – An 84-year-old woman died after being struck by a vehicle Friday morning in Antioch, according to police.

The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Norma Balgos Villegas, a resident of Antioch.

Authorities said Villegas was hit by a motorist at approximately 8 a.m. at the intersection of Country Hills Drive and Wolverine Way. Emergency responders arrived to find her in critical condition, and she was transported to a nearby hospital.

Despite medical efforts, Villegas later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

Police confirmed that the driver involved remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Each year, thousands of pedestrians lose their lives on U.S. roadways, a growing safety concern fueled by reckless driving, poor infrastructure, and car-focused road design. Between 2009 and 2023, pedestrian fatalities surged by 80%, while overall traffic deaths rose 13%, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).

“In many situations, pedestrians have the right of way when crossing streets or intersections, even if a marked crosswalk is not present,” said Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, stressed the importance of conducting an independent investigation by an experienced attorney to help safeguard the rights of the victim’s family in cases like this.

Factors such as roadway conditions, visibility of signage, and street lighting may all play a role and must be carefully evaluated. These steps are critical in helping families pursue justice after a tragic loss.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is generally the responsibility of drivers to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of Norma Balgos Villegas may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Families who lose a loved one in such incidents may seek compensation for loss of income, companionship, emotional distress, funeral costs, and pain and suffering,” Formica explained.

“Insurance companies sometimes attempt to push for quick settlements that may not reflect the true value of a claim,” Formica added. “An attorney can advocate on behalf of the family to ensure fair treatment and proper compensation.”
