OSP: Nina Westbrook dies in Clackamas County snowy accident

CLACKAMAS, OR, (April 15, 2026) — A Gresham woman was killed and three others injured Wednesday afternoon in a crash on a snow-covered highway in Clackamas County, according to Oregon State Police.

Authorities said a westbound 2014 Dodge Ram lost control on U.S. Highway 26 near Welches at about 3 p.m. due to speed and snowy conditions. The vehicle crossed the roadway, went into a ditch, and struck a tree.

Rear passenger Nina Westbrook, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and another passenger suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital, while a 2-year-old girl sustained minor injuries.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Driving on icy or snow-covered roadways requires significantly more caution than many motorists anticipate, as even a thin layer of ice can drastically reduce traction and increase stopping distances. Vehicles are more likely to skid during turns, braking can become unpredictable, and black ice may appear invisible while posing serious danger.

Limited visibility from blowing snow or frost-covered windshields adds further risk, reducing a driver’s ability to respond to hazards. Under such conditions, routine actions—like changing lanes or slowing down—can quickly become dangerous if speed is not adjusted and safe following distances are not maintained.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all potential contributing factors that must be carefully evaluated,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“In some cases, accident reconstruction specialists are necessary to determine exactly what occurred. These resources are essential in helping victims or their families recover compensation for losses resulting from a crash,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Nina Westbrook may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and pain and suffering following a tragic accident.

“The grief and stress after losing a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face, and ensuring their rights are protected is critical. A wrongful death attorney will remain informed about the investigation and help safeguard their legal rights and best interests.”
