Nico Vargas killed in San Marin Drive Novato DUI collision

NOVATO, CA, (April 11, 2026) — A tragic early morning crash in Novato claimed the life of teenager Nico Vargas and left four others seriously injured when an allegedly intoxicated juvenile driver lost control of a vehicle, authorities said.

According to police, the crash occurred around 1 a.m. along San Marin Drive near Simmons Lane. A vehicle carrying five نوجوان occupants, all between 16 and 18 years old, veered off the roadway and slammed into a utility pole. Vargas, who was a passenger, suffered fatal injuries at the scene.

Emergency responders transported the four surviving occupants to a nearby hospital with major injuries. Officials confirmed that the 17-year-old driver was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence. The incident remains under active investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Drunk driving continues to claim lives on U.S. roads, despite widespread awareness campaigns, tough laws and devastating statistics. The tragedy is that these deaths are entirely preventable. One person was killed in a drunk-driving crash every 42 minutes in the United States in 2023, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association.

An independent probe will be necessary to identify any additional contributing factors in this case, including the results of chemical testing to determine the driver’s blood-alcohol concentration.

“Drunken or drug-impaired motorists can face serious criminal charges when their actions result in injury or death,” explained Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. “Beyond criminal liability, families of victims may also pursue financial compensation through civil litigation,” Bond added.

“An experienced attorney can serve as a strong advocate, helping families navigate this difficult period while safeguarding their legal rights and holding negligent drivers accountable,” she said.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation results, the family members of Nico Vargas may be entitled to a wrongful death claim for medical and funeral expenses, the loss of love and companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“Wrongful death is established when a negligent or wrongful act directly leads to the loss of life,” said Stefano Formica, of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“In cases where fatal crashes involve reckless behavior such as impaired or unsafe driving, surviving family members typically have the right to file a civil lawsuit against the at-fault party.”
