Traditional moped and scooter accidents show concerning patterns, with NHTSA data indicating that riders are 35 times more likely to suffer fatal injuries than passenger vehicle occupants. A multi-year study of 5,660 moped crashes found that more than 90% of drivers were uninsured and only 17% wore helmets. Researchers also found that alcohol and drug use increased the risk of severe injury by 209%.

Electric scooter accidents have increased dramatically, according to research from UC San Francisco, with injuries rising from 8,566 in 2017 to 56,847 in 2022, representing a 45% annual increase. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported 169,300 emergency department visits related to e-scooters from 2017-2022, accounting for nearly 47% of all micromobility injuries.
