Newfane accident leads to arrest of Jonpaul Oliver for DWI

NEWFANE, NY (April 8, 2026) – A North Carolina man was arrested Wednesday evening after a two-vehicle collision crash in the Town of Newfane left multiple people injured.

According to the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, Jonpaul Oliver, 50, was driving a Dodge Ram pickup northbound on Day Road at approximately 6:16 p.m. when he failed to yield at a stop sign and collided with a Chevrolet Equinox traveling eastbound on Wheeler Road.

Following the impact, the pickup truck overturned multiple times before coming to rest.

The driver of the Chevrolet sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Two passengers in the pickup, including a child, were ejected in the crash and suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Oliver was arrested and faces multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated by drugs, aggravated DWI, and endangering the welfare of a child. Additional charges are pending.

DWI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

This crash appears to have been preventable. Drivers under the influence pose a serious threat to everyone on the road and can cause devastating consequences.

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), approximately 300,000 people are injured each year in the United States due to impaired driving. Alcohol or drug impairment can result in poor judgment, reduced coordination, impaired vision, and slower reaction times.

“Drivers who are under the influence can face criminal charges when their actions lead to injury or death,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“In addition to criminal liability, victims and their families may also pursue compensation through civil legal action against the responsible party,” Bond added.

Data from the National Safety Council shows that about 10 percent of all fatal crashes involve impaired driving, making it one of the leading causes of roadway deaths nationwide.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

The victims may have the right to pursue personal injury claims depending on the outcome of the investigation.

Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, explained, “Victims injured in a crash often file personal injury claims to recover expenses such as medical bills, future care, lost income, and compensation for emotional distress and pain and suffering.”

“Insurance companies are often indifferent to the increasing financial burden faced by victims. Legal representation can help ensure accountability and push insurers to provide fair compensation,” he added.
