New Baltimore head-on accident injures Charles Rappa, GCSO says

NEW BALTIMORE, NY, (April 21, 2026) – A 65-year-old man was injured in a head-on collision Tuesday afternoon in New Baltimore that also claimed the life of another driver, authorities said.

According to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred just before 2 p.m. on Route 144 when a 2019 Honda Civic traveling west crossed into the eastbound lane and collided with a 2017 Subaru Forester.

Deputies identified Charles Rappa as the driver of the Subaru. He sustained injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening and was transported by Ravena Rescue to Albany Medical Center for evaluation.

The driver of the Honda, a 26-year-old woman from Hannacroix, suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Her identity has not yet been released.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the cause of the collision.

HEAD-ON CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, early estimates show that 39,345 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2024, reflecting a 3.8 percent decrease from the prior year. This trend has continued into 2025, with preliminary figures for the first nine months indicating approximately 27,365 fatalities, a 6.4 percent drop compared to the same timeframe in 2024.

Despite this decline, driver error remains the leading cause of serious crashes. Speeding, distracted driving, and impairment continue to be major contributing factors in fatal head-on collisions nationwide.

“Factors such as roadway conditions, visibility, and lighting must be carefully evaluated,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“In some cases, accident reconstruction specialists are necessary to determine exactly what occurred. These resources are critical in helping victims pursue compensation for losses or damages resulting from a crash,” added Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Charles Rappa may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim depending on the outcome of the investigation.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, stated, “Victims injured in collisions often seek compensation for medical expenses, ongoing care, lost income, emotional distress, and pain and suffering.”

She added, “Insurance companies are often unwilling to fully account for the financial burden faced by injured individuals. An attorney can advocate on their behalf, working to ensure fair compensation and accountability for the harm caused.”
