PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

New York City recorded 127 pedestrian fatalities in 2023, a slight increase from 123 deaths in 2022, according to the New York City Department of Transportation. Pedestrian deaths account for approximately 45% of all traffic fatalities in the city, despite most New Yorkers walking or using public transit for daily transportation. Brooklyn and Queens consistently report the highest number of pedestrian crashes.

The NYC Department of Transportation reports that SUVs and larger vehicles are involved in a disproportionate number of fatal pedestrian crashes compared to standard passenger cars. The city’s Vision Zero initiative has introduced safety improvements at hundreds of intersections, although pedestrian fatalities have leveled off after the program’s early success following its 2014 launch.

The Governors Highway Safety Association says one reason for the increase is that more people are driving SUVs and pickup trucks, making it harder for drivers to see pedestrians. This reflects a nationwide trend that has seen pedestrian fatalities rise by nearly 60% since 2013.
