Nefi Gutierrez killed after DUI speeding driver hits pedestrians in LA

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CA, (April 12, 2026) — A high-speed crash involving an allegedly impaired driver in North Hollywood early Sunday morning left two pedestrians dead, including 35-year-old Nefi Lopez Gutierrez, officials said.

According to Los Angeles police, the incident occurred at approximately 2:25 a.m. on Colfax Avenue. A white Toyota Camry had stopped when Gutierrez and a ქალი in her 50s exited the vehicle. Moments later, a gray Acura traveling at a high rate of speed struck both pedestrians and then collided with the Camry.

Gutierrez and the unidentified woman died from their injuries. Authorities arrested 31-year-old Vidal Cruz Jr., a Pacoima resident, on two counts of murder. The case remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

While motorists are generally required to yield to pedestrians, individuals on foot still face significant risks. The Governors Highway Safety Association projected 6,721 pedestrian deaths in 2020, reflecting a troubling increase nationwide.

Alcohol-impaired driving remains a major contributor to fatal crashes, with approximately 11,000 deaths reported annually between 2014 and 2023, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News, noted that incidents like this often have both criminal and civil implications. “In addition to criminal prosecution, families may pursue compensation through civil lawsuits against those responsible,” Bond said.

She added, “Legal representation can help grieving families protect their rights and ensure accountability for reckless and impaired driving behavior.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the results of the investigation, the family of Nefi Lopez Gutierrez may be entitled to a wrongful death claim for medical and funeral expenses, the loss of love and companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“A wrongful death claim arises when a negligent or intentional act results in a fatality,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“In fatal crash cases involving reckless or impaired driving, surviving family members often have grounds to pursue civil action against the responsible driver.”
