Nathaniel Carter killed in crash near Olivia Street in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, CA, (March 21, 2026) – An 18-year-old pedestrian was killed Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle in South Bakersfield, authorities said.

The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Nathaniel Antwan Jerome Carter. The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of Pacheco Road near Olivia Street.

According to online fundraiser, Carter had been running an errand to buy milk for his nephew when he was hit by a vehicle. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver remained at the location following the crash. Alcohol or speed are not believed to have contributed to the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

A vulnerable road user—such as a pedestrian or runner—faces a significant disadvantage when sharing the road with motor vehicles. For this reason, drivers must remain alert and yield the right-of-way whenever required. Over the past decade, pedestrian fatalities have increased at a rate nearly seven times higher than U.S. population growth (7%), according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).

“In most situations, pedestrians have the right of way when crossing a street or intersection, regardless of whether they are in a marked crosswalk,” said Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, stressed the importance of conducting an independent investigation by a skilled attorney to help safeguard the rights of the victim’s family in incidents like this.

In cases of this nature, timing is critical. Promptly preserving and reviewing evidence can play a key role in determining exactly what occurred.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is almost always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of Nathaniel Antwan Jerome Carter may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Family members of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral costs, and emotional distress following a tragic accident,” Formica said. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can guide families through this difficult time while helping to protect their legal rights.

“Insurance companies often attempt to resolve claims quickly for far less than they are worth,” Formica added. “An attorney will work diligently to ensure that victims’ families are treated fairly and receive proper compensation.”
