FREEPORT, NY (March 25, 2026) – A 66-year-old man died after a hit-and-run crash on March 25 in Freeport, authorities said.
The victim, identified as Narciso Guerra Lopez, was crossing Merrick Road at approximately 8:10 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle, according to the Nassau County Police Department.
Lopez was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Police said the driver fled the scene but has since been apprehended and charged.
Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS or call 911.
By law, motorists involved in accidents must remain at the scene until authorities arrive. However, some drivers flee due to intoxication, lack of a valid license, or fear of arrest.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, between 2018 and 2022, more than 4 million people were involved in hit-and-run crashes, including over 12,000 fatal incidents.
