Naples Man Brian Johnson Killed in Fiery Head-On Crash

Naples, NY (July 1, 2026) — A 71-year-old man was killed Wednesday in a head-on crash on County Road 12 in Naples, according to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said Brian Johnson was driving a pickup truck towing a 35-foot camper when a Nissan Pathfinder, driven by a 40-year-old woman, crossed into the oncoming lane and struck his vehicle head-on at approximately 3:45 p.m. The impact caused both vehicles to catch fire.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, Sharon, was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital with leg fractures. The couple’s two dogs, who were traveling with them at the time, did not survive the crash.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the cause of the collision.

HEAD-ON ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Head-on collisions make up only about 2% of crashes nationwide, yet they are responsible for over 10% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States.

Candice Bond, a seasoned auto accident attorney, notes that driver error is typically behind crashes of this nature. Contributing factors can include speeding, impaired driving, distraction behind the wheel, inadequate road design, or driver disorientation. Investigators are expected to examine each of these possibilities as part of their review.

According to Bond, families in situations like this benefit greatly from having a skilled attorney conduct a separate, independent investigation to safeguard the victim’s rights.

“Acting quickly matters in cases like this, so the victim’s family can trust that all evidence is being thoroughly and promptly examined,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News. “A knowledgeable attorney will dig into the circumstances that may have led to the crash, drawing on resources to bring in expert witnesses, look into the at-fault driver’s history, track down witnesses, and assess the insurance coverage involved. Beyond the legal work, an attorney can also offer the family compassionate guidance through a painful time, all while safeguarding their legal rights and interests.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Brian Johnson’s family members may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of those killed in wrongful death cases can seek compensation for the loss of companionship, as well as pain, suffering, and emotional distress caused by a devastating or fatal accident.

“Families going through something like this deserve to know their rights are being protected every step of the way,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney keeps close track of the ongoing investigation to make sure the family’s interests are represented. Loved ones of wrongful death victims can pursue compensation for the loss of companionship, along with the pain, suffering, and emotional toll that follows such a tragic or catastrophic event.”
