Nancy Cunningham dies after San Luis Obispo Highway 101 collision

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA – (March 28, 2026) A 69 year old Georgia woman was killed in a multi vehicle crash on Highway 101 near the base of Cuesta Grade in San Luis Obispo County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The victim was identified as Nancy Louise Cunningham of Stratham, Georgia.

Preliminary findings indicate that a Toyota Camry was attempting to turn left onto Highway 101 from Higuera Ranch at 9:30 p.m. when it collided with a northbound Toyota Highlander. The impact caused significant damage to the Camry, leaving it disabled and without lights in the No. 1 northbound lane.

Authorities said Cunningham, who was a passenger in the Camry, was struck by a northbound Hyundai Tucson while attempting to exit the vehicle.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Five individuals, including three juveniles, were transported to Adventist Health Sierra Vista Hospital in San Luis Obispo with injuries described as minor to moderate.

The crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Every year, more pedestrians lose their lives on U.S. roads. These tragedies are often preventable when drivers remain attentive behind the wheel. Approximately 2,304 pedestrians were killed in the first half of 2024, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).

“Having the right resources is critical when investigating pedestrian accident cases and establishing negligence,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“Road conditions, signage visibility, and lighting must all be carefully evaluated as part of the investigation process,” Bond added.

“In some cases, accident reconstruction teams are required to determine what happened. These tools are essential in helping families pursue compensation,” said Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is almost always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of Nancy Louise Cunningham may be entitled to a wrongful death claim.

“Family members may seek compensation for loss of income, companionship, emotional distress, and funeral expenses following a tragic accident,” Formica said.

An attorney can help guide families through the legal process while protecting their rights.

“Insurance companies often attempt to settle quickly for less than what a claim is worth,” Formica noted. “An attorney will advocate to ensure fair compensation.”
