Motorcyclist Russell Lathrup II dies in high-speed pursuit crash in OK

CATOOSA, OK, (April 30, 2026) – A high-speed crash involving a motorcyclist fleeing law enforcement late Thursday night in Catoosa left one man dead and another person injured.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), a trooper attempted to stop a 1988 Honda Hurricane motorcycle traveling at speeds exceeding 120 mph on westbound Highway 412 at approximately 10:15 p.m. The rider, identified as 24-year-old Russell Troy Lathrup II, briefly slowed near the 193rd East Avenue exit ramp before accelerating away.

Authorities said moments later, the motorcycle ran a red light at the intersection of 193rd East Avenue and South Cherokee Street and collided with an eastbound SUV.

The SUV driver sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Lathrup was ejected from the motorcycle during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Traffic laws clearly require that when a law enforcement officer signals a driver to stop, the motorist must comply. Investigators will also review whether officers adhered to established pursuit protocols during the incident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 577 people lost their lives in collisions involving police pursuits in 2022, the highest number recorded for such incidents.

Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, emphasized that in cases like this, it is crucial to have an independent investigation conducted by a qualified attorney to safeguard victims’ rights.

“An attorney can gather critical evidence needed to demonstrate whether a driver acted recklessly, which often involves extensive resources,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “This may include re-interviewing witnesses, reviewing surveillance footage, and obtaining phone and text records from the responsible party. Acting as an advocate, an attorney helps guide victims while protecting their legal rights and interests.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending an investigation, the victim may have the right to pursue personal injury lawsuits. Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, noted that the stress resulting from an injury can be overwhelming, affecting all areas of life, including family, employment, finances, and overall well-being.

“It is essential for victims to retain an attorney when pursuing a personal injury claim, as legal counsel can effectively negotiate with insurance companies on their behalf,” Formica said.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure victims into accepting quick settlements that are significantly lower than what they deserve. An attorney will strongly advocate for clients to ensure they are treated fairly and receive appropriate compensation.”
