Motorcyclist Jacob Buman killed in Iowa collision with farm sprayer

SHELBY, IA, (April 29, 2026) – A 19-year-old motorcyclist from Harlan was killed Wednesday evening in a collision involving a farm vehicle north of Shelby, according to the Iowa State Patrol (ISP).

Authorities identified the victim as Jacob Buman.

Investigators said a 2010 Apache Sprayer and a 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle were both traveling north on County Road M16 when the crash occurred at approximately 7:25 p.m. The sprayer began a left turn into a driveway when the motorcycle struck it mid-turn.

The motorcycle came to rest in a ditch, and Buman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sprayer’s driver, a 37-year-old man from Shelby, was not injured. ISP continues to investigate the incident.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Farm and commercial vehicle crashes often involve multiple contributing factors, making independent investigation critical to understanding liability and preventing similar tragedies. Candice Bond, an experienced commercial accident attorney, emphasized the importance of prompt legal review in such cases.

“Commercial and agricultural vehicle crashes are often complex, involving several variables that must be carefully analyzed,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“A skilled attorney can help protect victims and their families by securing expert witnesses, reviewing driver histories, identifying witnesses, and evaluating all applicable insurance coverage. These steps are essential to ensure a complete and fair investigation into the cause of the crash.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family of Jacob Buman may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Such claims may include compensation for loss of income, funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and emotional suffering caused by the tragic loss.

“A death in the family due to an accident is both heartbreaking and life-altering,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“Beyond the emotional trauma, families often face significant financial burdens, including lost income and funeral costs. These challenges can make an already devastating situation even more difficult.”
