Motorcycle crash injures Richard Schoonover on U.S. 50 Ohio

SCIOTO TWP., OH, (April 07, 2026) — A motorcyclist was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 50 in Scioto Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Authorities said traffic was slowing in the southeast lanes near milepost 21 just before 3 p.m. when a 2011 Dodge Nitro failed to stop and struck the rear of a 2024 Harley-Davidson Road motorcycle.

The force of the crash pushed the motorcycle into a 2024 Chevrolet Equinox ahead. Richard L. Schoonover Jr., 55, of Chillicothe, who was operating the motorcycle, was briefly trapped before being freed.

He was transported to Adena Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. The other drivers were not injured.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

This incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by motorcyclists on roadways. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 83,000 motorcyclists were injured in crashes in 2021, representing an increase of about 5 percent from the prior year.

Candice Bond, a Managing Partner at Bond Legal and experienced motorcycle accident attorney, emphasized the need for preserving evidence through an independent investigation.

“Beyond the initial police report, an attorney will closely examine all contributing factors to the crash,” Bond said. “Legal teams have the ability to consult expert witnesses, review driver histories, identify witnesses, and assess insurance coverage. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can guide families through the process while ensuring accountability for those who violate traffic laws.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Following the investigation, Richard Schoonover may have the option to pursue a personal injury claim. Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, explained that injuries from such crashes can deeply affect a victim’s life, including their work, finances, and personal well-being.

“It is important for victims to seek legal representation when filing a personal injury claim, as attorneys can handle negotiations with insurance companies on their behalf,” Formica said.

He added, “Insurance companies frequently attempt to settle claims quickly for less than they are worth. An attorney will advocate to ensure victims are treated fairly and receive the compensation they deserve.”
