Moss Landing crash kills Bryan Ortiz in DUI hit-and-run accident

MOSS LANDING, CA (April 04, 2026) – Bryan Ortiz, 22, of Castroville, was killed early Saturday morning in a hit-and-run crash in Moss Landing, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said a BMW traveling northbound on Highway 1 crossed into oncoming traffic near Springfield Road at about 12:47 a.m. and collided head-on with a Ford SUV driven by Ortiz.

The BMW driver and a passenger fled the scene but were later located nearby. The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI, hit-and-run, and manslaughter.

DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Each year in the United States, drunk driving crashes result in hundreds of deaths and thousands of serious injuries—incidents that are entirely preventable. Alcohol significantly reduces reaction time, impairs judgment, and affects motor coordination, making it unsafe to operate a vehicle.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 1,479 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes in California in 2022.

An independent investigation will be necessary to determine additional contributing factors, including blood-alcohol concentration levels.

Candice Bond, an experienced DUI and hit-and-run accident attorney, shared her perspective on cases like this.

“Separate from any criminal proceedings, victims or their families may pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “In addition to law enforcement efforts, an attorney can re-examine witness statements, review surveillance footage, and obtain phone and texting records. Acting as an advocate, a lawyer helps guide victims through the legal process while ensuring accountability.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Bryan Ortiz may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.

“The grief and emotional strain after losing a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the hardships families endure and the importance of protecting their rights. A wrongful death attorney will stay informed about the investigation and help ensure that their legal interests are protected.”
