CARMEL, CA – April 16, 2026 – A 96-year-old man was killed and another person was injured in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 1 in Monterey County, California, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Officials said the crash occurred on April 9 near Handley Drive at approximately 12:30 p.m.
Investigators reported that William Ziering of Carmel was driving a Lexus sedan southbound when, for reasons still under investigation, he crossed the double yellow centerline and collided with a northbound Honda SUV driven by a 78-year-old Carmel woman. After the initial impact, the Lexus reportedly returned to the southbound lane and struck a Subaru sedan traveling ahead of it.
Ziering died as a result of the crash, authorities confirmed. The driver of the Honda SUV sustained major injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
CHP continues to investigate the circumstances leading to the collision.
