Moncerrat Martinez Killed by Racing Driver in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, TX, (June 28, 2026) — A 17-year-old girl was killed on June 28 when she was struck by a vehicle that was racing another driver on San Antonio’s Southwest Side.

Police said a white Dodge Charger was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed while racing another vehicle when the driver changed lanes and struck Moncerrat Martinez as she was crossing South Military Drive at about 10:22 p.m. The driver continued for about two blocks before stopping.

Police later arrested the driver, identified as 19-year-old Vynzell Edward McGarity, on a charge of racing causing serious bodily injury or death. The accident remains under investigation.

A GoFundMe has been launched to help Martinez’s family pay for funeral expenses.

Crash Investigation Needed

Street racing is a form of reckless driving, and it puts innocent bystanders on our roadways at risk.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speed-related crashes accounted for nearly a third of all U.S. traffic deaths in 2022, or one in every four fatalities. While the cause and liability of the crash are being investigated, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, said it is essential to have an independent investigation conducted by a seasoned attorney.

“Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide a family who has lost a loved one during this difficult time, as well as protect their legal rights and best interests,” Bond said.

“Insurance companies are financially motivated to limit compensation and do not factor in the long-term consequences and suffering those victims will ultimately experience,” said Bond. “Attorneys vigorously advocate for their clients to ensure that they are treated with respect and compensated fairly,” added Bond, a national analyst with Accident Injury News.

Wrongful Death Claim

The family members of Moncerrat Martinez may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain, suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.

“We understand just what families are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death lawyer will stay updated on the official investigation and help ensure that their best interests are taken care of. Relatives of wrongful death victims are entitled to seek damages for the loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.”
