Alabama recorded 975 traffic fatalities in 2023, with pedestrian deaths accounting for an increasing share of those fatalities. According to Drive Safe Alabama, most deadly pedestrian crashes occurred at night, and distracted driving was identified as a major contributing factor. Although urban areas experienced the highest number of crashes, rural roadways accounted for the majority of fatal incidents.

The Governors Highway Safety Association says one factor behind the rise in pedestrian fatalities is the growing number of SUVs and pickup trucks on the road, which can make it more difficult for drivers to see pedestrians. Nationally, pedestrian deaths have increased by nearly 60% since 2013.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors considered and examined,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.
