BELLEVILLE, Ill. — The Belleville Police Department is investigating a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash that claimed the life of a resident last week.
Milford Eaves, 60, of Belleville, was pronounced dead at Saint Louis University Hospital at 11:50 p.m. on Friday, June 6. A spokesperson for the medical examiner, released the victim’s identity.
Belleville officers were dispatched at 8:30 p.m. to investigate a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. The crash occurred in the 1200 block of Centreville Avenue. They found Eaves lying unconscious in the roadway with serious injuries. He was still breathing when officers arrived at the scene.
Officers and EMS personnel immediately began life-saving measures on Eaves. Despite their efforts, he was transported to a St. Louis hospital where doctors later pronounced him dead.
A gold 1998 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck struck Eaves during the incident. The driver of the truck was a 61-year-old man whose name has not been released. The driver stayed at the scene after the crash occurred and spoke with investigating officers.
Police arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. However, authorities later released him pending additional investigation into the crash.
Belleville Police said Thursday that their investigation into the fatal accident continues.
