SPARTANBURG, SC, (April 12, 2026) – A 9-year-old boy was killed Sunday afternoon in a suspected DUI crash in Spartanburg County.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 12:20 p.m. on Asheville Highway near Brock Street. A Honda Accord ran off the roadway and struck two children riding bicycles on a sidewalk.
Mikhail-Lee Smith, 9, and a 12-year-old companion were critically injured and transported to a hospital, where both later died.
Authorities reported that the driver showed signs of severe intoxication and was unable to stand at the scene. The suspect has been denied bond and faces multiple charges, including felony DUI resulting in death.
Investigators are also searching for a passenger who fled the scene following the crash.
