Michael Swarts hurt after pickup runs stop sign in Mitchell County IA

MITCHELL, IA, (May 14, 2026) – Michael A. Swarts, 64, of Cedar Falls, was injured Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle collision in Mitchell County, according to the Iowa State Police.

Authorities said Swarts was driving a 2022 Volvo on Highway 218 at approximately 1:30 p.m. when a 2026 Dodge Ram pickup traveling east on 480th Street entered the intersection.

Investigators reported that the 27-year-old Cedar Rapids driver of the Dodge failed to stop at a stop sign at the Highway 218 intersection and was struck by the Volvo driven by Swarts.

After the collision, the pickup truck traveled into the east ditch and knocked down a power pole.

Swarts sustained injuries and was transported to Mitchell County Hospital for treatment. The Dodge driver was also injured in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation by authorities.

TWO-VEHICLE CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Traffic laws clearly require motorists to stop at all stop signs. Unfortunately, some drivers fail to obey these rules, leading to collisions such as the one that injured Swarts.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, about 40 percent of vehicle crashes occur at intersections, often because of drivers running stop signs or traffic lights. Common contributing factors include impatience, reckless driving, and distracted driving.

Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, noted that in cases like this, it is important to have an independent investigation conducted by an experienced lawyer to help protect the rights of injured victims and their families. The sooner an investigation begins, the better the opportunity to preserve evidence.

“In addition to reviewing the police report, an attorney will carefully examine all possible contributing factors to the crash. As personal injury attorneys, our role is to provide legal guidance and support to individuals injured in accidents. We can help protect victims’ rights and prevent statements made to police or insurance companies from being used against them,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“An accident reconstruction team may also be necessary to determine exactly what happened. Every case is unique and deserves a thorough investigation. Time is critical in situations such as this, and families must ensure evidence is reviewed promptly and efficiently. As attorneys, our responsibility is to provide legal information and guidance to injured victims and their families while protecting their rights,” added Bond, who is also a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the results of the investigation, Michael A. Swarts may possess the right to pursue a personal injury claim to seek compensation for mounting medical bills, future medical care, loss of income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering. The stress and uncertainty following a serious injury can be overwhelming, affecting family life, employment, finances, and overall quality of life.

“An incident is considered a personal injury when a person or entity commits a wrongful or negligent act that results in injuries to another person,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“Insurance companies are often financially motivated to limit compensation and may not consider the long-term effects and suffering an injured victim could experience. Attorneys strongly advocate for their clients to help ensure they are treated fairly and properly compensated,” Formica added.
