Michael Smith hurt in US 59 Nacogdoches CO collision, DPS says

NACOGDOCHES, TX, (April 18, 2026) – A two-vehicle crash in Nacogdoches County on Saturday morning left one man injured and claimed the lives of two others, according to authorities.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the crash occurred at approximately 9:54 a.m. at a stop-controlled intersection along FM 941 and U.S. 59. Investigators said a northbound Toyota Corolla failed to yield and entered the path of a northeastbound GMC Canyon.

The GMC, driven by Michael Smith, 45, of Nacogdoches, struck the Toyota. Smith sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Both occupants of the Toyota were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.

The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Every year, millions are injured in U.S. traffic crashes—many with life-altering consequences. Approximately 2.44 million people were injured in motor vehicle accidents in 2023 across the country, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

While authorities continue to determine the cause of this crash, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized the importance of conducting an independent investigation.

“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-examine key witnesses, review any available surveillance footage from the crash site, and secure phone and texting records of the responsible party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Time is critical in cases like these, and it is essential that the victim’s family ensures all evidence is promptly and thoroughly reviewed,” Bond added.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, Michael Smith may have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, noted that the stress and uncertainty following a serious injury can be overwhelming, affecting many areas of life such as family, employment, finances, and overall well-being.

“It is important for victims to retain an attorney when filing a personal injury claim, as this allows for proper negotiation with insurance companies on the client’s behalf,” Formica said.

“Insurance companies often attempt to push quick settlements that are far below what a case may truly be worth. An attorney, however, will strongly advocate for their client to ensure fair treatment and appropriate compensation,” Formica added.
