Michael Sharpe dies in DUI crash on Old Augusta Road Rincon

Rincon, GA, (May 01, 2026) – A 47-year-old man was killed Friday evening in a head-on crash in Effingham County involving an allegedly impaired driver, authorities said.

According to the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, the collision occurred just after 5 p.m. on Old Augusta Road. Investigators said a Ford Escape driven by 27-year-old Deiby Janamejoy Jansasoy was traveling northbound when it crossed over the center line and collided with a Chevrolet Silverado operated by Michael Sharpe.

Emergency responders extricated Sharpe from his vehicle. He was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities reported that Jansasoy was charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle, reckless driving, driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane, and driving while unlicensed.

The crash remains under investigation.

FATAL DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Jansasoy was transported to a hospital and later taken into custody after reportedly attempting to leave prior to being discharged. Officials indicated that the charges could be updated or expanded as the investigation progresses.

The tragic loss of Sharpe highlights the ongoing dangers associated with impaired driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 30 individuals lose their lives each day in alcohol-related crashes across the United States—equating to one fatality every 50 minutes. Annually, these incidents account for more than 10,000 deaths.

A thorough independent investigation will be necessary to determine if additional contributing factors played a role in the crash.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News, emphasized the importance of a comprehensive legal review in such cases.

“Separate from any criminal proceedings, the victim’s family may have the right to pursue compensation through a civil action,” Bond said. “In addition to law enforcement efforts, an attorney can revisit witness accounts, examine surveillance footage, and obtain phone and communication records of the at-fault party. Acting as an advocate, legal counsel can help guide families through the legal process while working to hold impaired drivers accountable.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Michael Sharpe may be eligible to file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for medical costs, funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and emotional suffering.

“A wrongful death claim arises when a negligent or wrongful act leads to a person’s death,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. “In cases involving unsafe driving behaviors such as impairment, distraction, or recklessness, families often have the legal right to pursue a civil claim against the responsible party.”
