Police: Michael Qualls killed by speeding driver in Los Banos

LOS BANOS, CA, (April 25, 2026) – A 34-year-old man was killed in a head-on collision involving a speeding vehicle Saturday in Los Banos, according to police.

Authorities said Michael Qualls was working as a DoorDash delivery driver when the crash occurred at the intersection of Santa Barbara Drive and Linwood Court. Investigators reported that Qualls’ vehicle was struck by another car whose driver was allegedly traveling at speeds up to twice the posted limit.

Witnesses at the scene described a violent impact. Emergency responders arrived quickly and transported Qualls to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

No arrests have been made, and the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

In 2024, speeding was a contributing factor in 29% of all traffic fatalities.

Excessive speed significantly reduces a driver’s reaction time in dangerous situations, increases stopping distance, and diminishes the effectiveness of roadway safety features designed to prevent serious crashes.

Regardless of the findings of any official investigation, Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, emphasized the importance of retaining legal counsel to conduct an independent investigation to preserve critical evidence and protect the rights of those affected.

“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any available surveillance footage from the crash site, and obtain phone and texting records of the responsible driver,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News. “An attorney can provide compassionate guidance during this difficult time while also safeguarding the legal rights and interests of the victim’s family.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Michael Qualls may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families in such cases may seek damages for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and pain and suffering following a catastrophic loss.

“The emotional burden after losing a loved one in a tragic accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “We understand the challenges families face, and protecting their legal rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the investigation and ensure their interests are fully represented.”
