CLAIBORNE, TN, January 06, 2026 – A Claiborne County man was killed Tuesday in a pedestrian crash involving a pickup truck, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Authorities said Michael Hembree, 56, was struck by a GMC Sierra on Highway 33 at Barnard Lane. Emergency responders transported Hembree to Claiborne County Medical Center, where he later died.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol said the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
Pickup trucks and SUVs are more likely to strike pedestrians, particularly while turning, due to their size and elevated hoods, which can limit driver visibility. Their greater mass also increases the likelihood of severe injuries or fatalities when collisions occur.
Drivers struck and killed an estimated 7,508 pedestrians in 2022, marking the highest number of pedestrian deaths in four decades, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association.
