Michael Derrick Died After Being Struck Off Bridge in Columbia SC

COLUMBIA, SC — June 7, 2026 — A 24-year-old Georgia man was killed Sunday evening after a vehicle struck him on the Gervais Street Bridge, throwing him over the railing, according to the Columbia Police Department (CPD).

Officers identified the victim as Michael Derrick, 24, of Snellville, Georgia. Investigators report that Derrick was on the Gervais Street Bridge when a vehicle operated by a 30-year-old man struck him, propelling him over the bridge railing. Derrick was discovered beneath the bridge by responding emergency personnel and was subsequently pronounced dead.

The driver was initially taken into custody and charged with Felony DUI with Bodily Injury. Following Derrick’s death, authorities upgraded the charge to Felony DUI Resulting in Death. A judge denied bond after the charge was elevated. The suspect is currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. His identity has not been publicly released by authorities.

The case remains under active investigation by both the Columbia Police Department and the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Impaired drivers continue to pose a grave and senseless threat to every person sharing the road, and the consequences of their choices can permanently devastate the lives of innocent victims and their families.

“Drunken and drugged drivers are subject to criminal charges following an accident or collision that causes harm or kills another person,” explained Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

She further emphasized, “Separate from criminal charges, a victim’s family may be entitled to compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party.”

The National Safety Council has found that 10 percent of all fatal automobile accidents in this country are caused by drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or other medications. These devastating and entirely preventable crashes rank as the second-leading cause of automobile fatalities across the United States.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Subject to the outcome of the ongoing investigation, the family of the victim may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving family members in such cases may seek damages to cover loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress arising from a tragic and catastrophic incident of this nature.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“We fully appreciate the enormous burden that families are made to carry in the aftermath of tragedies like this, and ensuring that their rights are protected is absolutely essential. A wrongful death attorney will remain closely involved in monitoring the official investigation and will work relentlessly to protect their legal rights and best interests throughout the entire process,” Formica added.
