Michael Barcellos driving pickup in Patterson crash that kills man

PATTERSON, CA, (September 23, 2026) – Authorities are investigating a crash that killed a 71-year-old man riding a John Deere Gator Wednesday morning in Stanislaus County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a Ford pickup truck towing a livestock trailer and driven by Patterson resident Michael Barcellos, 48, collided with the Gator at about 7:10 a.m. on Marshall Road near Alfalfa Road and Patterson.

The front of the Ford struck the rear of the Gator, causing the 71-year-old driver to be ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Barcellos was not injured in the collision.

FATAL ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION NEEDED

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not determined whether Barcellos will face charges.

According to Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, 90% of rear-end crashes are caused by distracted driving.

Distractions that can contribute to rear-end collisions include eating, texting, adjusting a vehicle’s radio, rubbernecking at accidents and interacting with passengers. Bond emphasized that in cases such as this, an independent investigation should be conducted as soon as possible to preserve evidence for the victim’s grieving family.

“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can collect the proper evidence to help prove that a driver’s actions were reckless, which requires a variety of resources,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Your lawyer can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any surveillance video from the scene of the crash and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party. Serving as an advocate, an attorney will help compassionately guide grieving families during this difficult time while protecting their legal rights and best interests.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the results of the investigation, the family of the 71-year-old man may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of love and companionship, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident such as this one.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “We understand what families are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital. A wrongful death lawyer will monitor the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”
