CHANNAHON, IL, (April 05, 2026) – A 26-year-old woman died following a two-vehicle crash early Sunday on Interstate 55 in Channahon, authorities said.
Illinois State Police identified the victim as Melissa Prosser of Bourbonnais. The crash occurred just before 3:15 a.m. near milepost 246 by Bluff Road.
Prosser was taken to Saint Joseph Medical Center, where she later died. The crash remains under investigation.
In 2023, Illinois recorded 1,211 traffic fatalities and 295,604 total crashes statewide, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. Urban areas had higher crash numbers, while rural areas saw more severe outcomes.
Common contributing factors include speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving.
“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all contributing factors that must be carefully evaluated,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.
