Melchor De la Torre Killed After E-Bike Crash in Paramount

PARAMOUNT, CA, (September 24, 2026) – Melchor De la Torre, 54, was killed Thursday night after he was apparently riding an electric bicycle when he was struck by a driver who fled the scene in Paramount, authorities said.

The crash occurred around 11 p.m. on an on-ramp from Rosecrans Avenue to the Long Beach (710) Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Preliminary reports indicate De la Torre was riding his e-bike on Rosecrans Boulevard when he was struck, causing him to be thrown onto the on-ramp.

De la Torre suffered traumatic injuries and died at the scene. Authorities said an e-bike was found at the crash site.

The motorist involved in the collision fled the scene, and no information was immediately available about the driver.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

New research published this week by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that more than 919,000 police-reported crashes in 2023 involved a driver who fled the scene, resulting in 242,000 injuries and 2,872 fatalities. Hit-and-run crashes accounted for 15% of all crashes in 2023, the highest percentage recorded in any recent year. The study describes a growing crisis on U.S. roads that can leave injured people without assistance and, in many cases, without someone to hold accountable.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a hit-and-run case and prove negligence,” said Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney and a Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“Road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting are all possible contributing factors that are considered and must thoroughly be examined. These procedures are necessary for helping those who have lost a loved one receive the justice that they deserve.”

Bond, the national analyst for Accident Injury News, added, “The driver always has to take great care behind the wheel.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Melchor De la Torre may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident such as this incident.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“We understand just what families are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital. A wrongful death lawyer will stay updated on the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”
