Matthew Clark charged in crash killing two women in Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake, CA, (May 04, 2026) – Two women were killed and another person critically injured Monday morning in a suspected drunk-driving crash in Big Bear Lake, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities said the collision occurred at approximately 10:22 a.m. at the intersection of Cienega Road and Big Bear Boulevard. A preliminary investigation found that a Ford Super Duty pickup driven by 52-year-old Matthew Clark of Oxnard was traveling southbound on Cienega Road and allegedly failed to stop at a posted stop sign.

The pickup entered the intersection and struck a Subaru Crosstrek traveling westbound on Big Bear Boulevard. Two female passengers in the Subaru sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead.

The driver of the Subaru was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center with major injuries.

Clark was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and is being held in lieu of $250,000 bail. He was booked into the West Valley Detention Center.

The crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Even when a driver may not feel impaired, alcohol or drugs can significantly affect coordination and judgment. Impaired driving greatly increases the likelihood of serious or fatal crashes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 10,850 people died each year in drunk-driving accidents between 2012 and 2021.

A comprehensive independent investigation will be necessary to identify all contributing factors, including the results of any blood-alcohol testing conducted on the driver.

“Drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs can face serious criminal consequences when their actions result in injury or death,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. “Beyond criminal charges, victims’ families may also pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party.”

“Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help guide victims and their families through the legal process, ensuring their rights are protected and that impaired drivers are held accountable,” added Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the families of the victims killed in the crash may be entitled to pursue wrongful death claims for damages including medical and funeral expenses, loss of companionship, emotional distress, and pain and suffering.

“A wrongful death occurs when a negligent or wrongful act leads to the loss of life,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“In cases involving dangerous driving behaviors such as impairment, distraction, or speeding, families are often left with the option to file a civil claim against the at-fault party to seek justice and accountability.”
