Matthew Bober Charged in Burnside Street DUII Wreck in Portland

PORTLAND, OR, (May 09, 2026) – Three people were injured early Friday morning in a downtown Portland DUII crash that led to the arrest of a suspect, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Authorities said the collision occurred at approximately 1:23 a.m. at the intersection of W. Burnside Street and N.W. Eighth Avenue and involved a rideshare vehicle and another passenger vehicle. The impact left both drivers trapped inside their vehicles.

Portland Fire & Rescue crews responded to the scene and extricated the victims from the wreckage. A rideshare driver, a passenger, and the second driver were all transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries. Officials said all three are expected to survive.

Police identified the suspect as Matthew J. Bober, 37, who was placed under guard at the hospital before being booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center. He faces multiple charges, including DUII, second-degree assault, reckless driving, and recklessly endangering another person.

The Portland Police Bureau’s Traffic Division continues to investigate the crash.

DUII ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Impaired drivers present a serious danger to all road users and continue to cause preventable injuries and fatalities nationwide.

“Drunken and drugged drivers are subject to criminal charges following an accident or collision that causes harm or death,” explained Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

Bond further noted, “Separate from criminal charges, the family or injured victims may be entitled to pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party.”

According to the National Safety Council, about 10 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes involve drivers under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or other substances, making impaired driving one of the leading causes of roadway deaths in the United States.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

An injured victim may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim depending on the outcome of the investigation.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal, stated, “Injured victims involved in a collision often pursue claims to recover medical expenses, future treatment costs, lost wages, emotional distress, and pain and suffering.”

He added, “Insurance companies often minimize the financial impact of serious injuries. Legal representation can help ensure victims receive fair compensation for the harm caused.”
