Fatal tractor-trailer accident in Moss Hill involves Mateyah Powell

A fatal crash involving a tractor-trailer and passenger vehicle occurred Sept. 9 in Liberty County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Powell, 25, of Beaumont, was operating a 2017 Freightliner tractor-trailer northbound on Texas 146 near noon when she attempted a turn into a gravel pit driveway south of the Snake River Subdivision. The tractor-trailer entered the path of a southbound 2018 Ford Fusion, resulting in a deadly collision.

The 21-year-old Lufkin driver of the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have notified the family, though the victim’s name has not been released. Prosecutors in Liberty County will present the case to a grand jury for potential charges against Powell.


CRASH INVESTIGATION 

Texas reported 26,298 tractor-trailer crashes and 650 fatal large truck accidents in 2023—52% more than California, the next highest state, according to federal and state transportation data. Overall, the state logged 43,780 commercial motor vehicle collisions involving 128,099 individuals. Since 2020, truck crashes in Texas have risen by 13%, with approximately one in every 1,000 licensed drivers involved in such incidents each year.
