Maryanne Drake Injured as Chrysler Hits Bus Near Port Orford

PORT ORFORD, OR, (June 26, 2026) — Maryanne Drake, 18, of Auburn, Washington, was hospitalized with serious injuries Friday morning following a two-vehicle head-on collision near Port Orford, Curry County.

According to the Oregon State Police, an 18-year-old from Washington was driving a black Chrysler Pacifica northbound on Highway 101 near milepost 312 when he reportedly fell asleep at the wheel. The Chrysler then drifted into the opposite lane and crashed head-on into a school bus converted into a motorhome at 8:20 a.m.

Drake, a passenger in the Chrysler, sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. Two other passengers in the Chrysler were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The Chrysler driver died at the scene.

The bus driver, a 73-year-old man from Fort Bragg, California, was not injured in the collision.

The Curry County Sheriff’s Office, Gold Beach Fire Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.

Head-On Accident Investigation Needed

The Oregon State Police continue to investigate the crash.
Every day, passengers such as Drake are injured or killed in motorcycle accidents, and many times, it is not their fault.
Head-on crashes remain among the most dangerous types of accidents on our roadways, and as this incident illustrates, the outcomes can be devastating. While only 2% of crashes in the United States are head-on collisions, they account for more than 10% of all crash-related fatalities.
According to Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, a range of factors can contribute to a head-on crash, including driver error, distracted driving, driver fatigue, speeding, and poor road design. Still, the most common cause of these collisions is driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
“Safe driving is our civic duty. Our roads belong to everyone, and when rules are broken that cause harm to another individual, those breaking the law must be held accountable,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.
“Your lawyer has the resources to hire expert witnesses, conduct drivers’ background checks, locate witnesses to the crash and review applicable insurance coverage.
Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide a grieving family during this difficult time while vigorously protecting their legal rights and best interests,” said Bond, who is a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

Personal Injury Claim

Maryanne Drake may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim, pending the results of the investigation.

“Injured victims involved in a collision often seek a personal injury claim to cover the cost of medical bills, future medical care, loss of income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.

“It is vital for victims to hire an attorney when filing a personal injury claim, which allows them to negotiate with an insurance company on behalf of a client.”

“Insurance companies often try to pressure victims to settle for a quick payout for far less than the case is worth. However, an attorney will vigorously advocate for their client to ensure that they are treated with respect and compensated fairly,” added Formica.
