NORTHBROOK, Ill. — A Waukegan man died Monday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash that shut down the Edens Expressway for several hours.
Emergency crews responded to the collision near milepost 30 after receiving reports of a multi-vehicle crash. One vehicle was thrown off the roadway and severely damaged by the collision’s force.
Martin Maldonado-Velazquez, 60, of Waukegan, was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Lake County Coroner’s Office confirmed his identity and determined he died from blunt force trauma sustained in the crash.
The fatal collision forced authorities to close the Edens Expressway and the Edens Spur between the Tri-State and Edens. The Dundee Road and Lake-Cook Road ramps were also shut down during the investigation.
