Mark Wharton dies in Saluda County hit-and-run accident, SCHP says

SALUDA, SC, (April 22, 2026) – A 61-year-old Monetta man was killed Wednesday night in a hit-and-run crash in Saluda County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Authorities said Mark W. Wharton was operating a 2000 Suzuki motorcycle westbound on Columbia Highway (U.S. Highway 378) near Roseland Drive at approximately 10:10 p.m. when he struck a deer.

Following the initial collision, Wharton was left in the roadway. Troopers said he was then struck by an unidentified vehicle whose driver fled the scene without stopping.

Wharton sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate and is working to identify the vehicle and driver involved.

HIT-AND-RUN CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal hit-and-run collision.

Drivers involved in crashes have legal obligations, including remaining at the scene and ensuring that injured victims receive appropriate medical care. The individual who struck Wharton and fled will likely face criminal charges once identified.

Leaving the scene of an accident is a serious offense. In many hit-and-run cases, drivers attempt to avoid responsibility by fleeing, but they are often later apprehended.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, more than one hit-and-run crash occurs every minute across U.S. roadways, with an average of 682,000 such incidents reported annually since 2006.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, emphasized that a prompt and independent investigation is crucial to protect the rights of victims.

“Access to proper resources is essential to thoroughly investigate a hit-and-run crash and establish negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“These efforts are critical in helping victims or their families pursue justice and secure the financial compensation they deserve. An attorney can also play a key role in ensuring that a hit-and-run driver is held accountable.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Mark W. Wharton may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim for damages such as funeral expenses, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.

“A wrongful death occurs when a person’s life is lost due to another party’s negligent or unlawful actions,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“When fatal crashes are caused by unsafe behaviors such as reckless driving, distraction, speeding, or impairment, families are often left with the option of filing a civil lawsuit against the responsible party,” Formica added.
