NEWTON GROVE, NC, (April 21, 2026) – A 55-year-old passenger was seriously injured in a UTV crash Tuesday evening in Sampson County that also claimed the life of the driver, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP).
Troopers said the crash occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Old U.S. 421 near the intersection with U.S. 421. A 2025 Zhejiang CF Moto side-by-side was traveling north when the rear driver’s-side tire reportedly detached, causing the vehicle to lose control and skid off the roadway.
The UTV overturned after leaving the road, ejecting both occupants. Mark West, who was a passenger, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment.
Authorities confirmed that the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe speed may have contributed to the crash, though impairment is not suspected.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident.
