Mario Garcia Gonzalez killed in Austin hit-and-run, APD reports

AUSTIN, TX (April 1, 2026) — Authorities are searching for a driver who fled the scene after a fatal hit-and-run collision Wednesday afternoon in Austin.

The victim was identified as 40-year-old Mario Alfonso Garcia Gonzalez. According to the Austin Police Department, the incident occurred around 2:26 p.m. at the intersection of North Lamar Boulevard and Rutland Drive.

Investigators said Gonzalez was struck by a motor vehicle while at the intersection. The driver failed to stop and continued without rendering aid. Gonzalez was pronounced dead following the crash.

The Vehicular Homicide Unit has assumed control of the investigation and is reviewing traffic camera footage from the surrounding area.

FATAL ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

In many hit-and-run cases, at-fault drivers believe they can evade responsibility by leaving the scene. However, suspects can and often do face charges once identified.

Leaving the scene of an accident is a criminal offense, and statistics show that more than one hit-and-run crash occurs every minute on U.S. roadways.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, emphasized that it is crucial to have an independent investigation carried out promptly by a qualified attorney to safeguard a victim’s rights.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a hit-and-run accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“Factors such as road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all carefully evaluated during the investigation process,” Bond added.

These steps are essential in helping families who have lost a loved one in a hit-and-run crash pursue justice and financial compensation.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Mario Garcia Gonzalez could pursue a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic accident such as this.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face, and ensuring their rights are protected is critical. A wrongful death attorney will remain informed on the official investigation and help protect the family’s legal rights and best interests.”
