ATLANTA, GA (June 28, 2026) — A woman was killed in a suspected impaired-driving crash early Sunday in downtown Atlanta, and the driver has been arrested, according to the Atlanta Police Department.
Police said the collision occurred at approximately 2:49 a.m. near the intersection of Courtland Avenue NE and Auburn Avenue NE. Investigators determined that a 50-year-old woman was crossing the street near the crosswalk when she was struck by a southbound Jeep Wrangler.
Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but the pedestrian died from her injuries. Authorities have not publicly released the victim’s identity.
The driver, identified as Marie Bahindwa, remained at the scene following the collision. She was arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence, reckless driving and an open container violation.
The Atlanta Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash. No additional details have been released.
