Marie Bahindwa charged with homicide in Atlanta DUI collision

ATLANTA, GA (June 28, 2026) — A woman was killed in a suspected impaired-driving crash early Sunday in downtown Atlanta, and the driver has been arrested, according to the Atlanta Police Department.

Police said the collision occurred at approximately 2:49 a.m. near the intersection of Courtland Avenue NE and Auburn Avenue NE. Investigators determined that a 50-year-old woman was crossing the street near the crosswalk when she was struck by a southbound Jeep Wrangler.

Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but the pedestrian died from her injuries. Authorities have not publicly released the victim’s identity.

The driver, identified as Marie Bahindwa, remained at the scene following the collision. She was arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence, reckless driving and an open container violation.

The Atlanta Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash. No additional details have been released.

DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Impaired drivers continue to pose a serious threat to everyone using the nation’s roadways, often causing preventable tragedies that leave families devastated.

“Drunken and drugged drivers are subject to criminal charges following an accident or collision that causes harm or kills another person,” explained Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

She added, “In addition to criminal prosecution, the victim’s family may also have the right to pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit against the at-fault driver.”

According to the National Safety Council, 10 percent of all fatal automobile accidents are caused by drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or other medications. These accidents are the second-leading cause of automobile fatalities in the United States.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of the victim may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving relatives can seek compensation for the loss of companionship, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and other damages resulting from a tragic accident such as this.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal.

“We understand the difficult challenges families face after such a devastating loss, and protecting their legal rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the official investigation and help ensure that the family’s best interests remain protected throughout the process,” Formica added.
