EPPD: Maria Longoria killed in El Paso pedestrian crash

EL PASO, TX (April 5, 2026) – A 74-year-old woman was fatally struck by a vehicle Sunday morning while crossing a downtown El Paso intersection, according to police.

Authorities identified the victim as Maria Patrocinio Longoria. The incident occurred at approximately 8:15 a.m. at Texas Avenue and North Kansas Street.

Investigators said Longoria was crossing in a marked crosswalk and had the right-of-way when she was hit by a 2011 Volvo S40 driven by an 86-year-old man.

Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but Longoria was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver was attempting to turn onto North Kansas Street and failed to yield to the pedestrian. He remained at the scene and cooperated with officers.

No charges have been filed. The El Paso Police Department’s Special Traffic Investigations Unit is handling the case.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Texas recorded 808 pedestrian fatalities and 5,924 pedestrian-involved crashes in 2023, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. The agency reports that pedestrian deaths rose by 22 percent between 2019 and 2023, highlighting increasing risks for those walking on or crossing Texas roads.

Although pedestrians account for only 1% of all traffic crashes in Texas, they represent 19% of all roadway fatalities. Common contributing factors include drivers failing to yield the right-of-way and inattentive driving.

The Governors Highway Safety Association notes that the rise in SUV and pickup use may contribute, as these vehicles can make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians. This reflects a broader national trend, with pedestrian fatalities increasing nearly 60% since 2013.

“Roadway conditions, visibility, and lighting are all key factors that must be evaluated,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“In some cases, accident reconstruction specialists are necessary to determine exactly what occurred. These resources are essential in helping victims or families pursue compensation for losses following a crash,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is almost always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of Maria Longoria may be entitled to a wrongful death claim.

“Family members of wrongful death victims may pursue damages for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral costs, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident,” said Formica.

An attorney can serve as an advocate, helping guide families through this difficult time while safeguarding their rights.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure victims into accepting quick settlements for far less than a case may be worth,” Formica noted. “However, an attorney will strongly advocate to ensure clients are treated fairly and receive proper compensation.”
