Maria Contreras Albino killed in SR-78 Julian CA rollover collision

JULIAN, CA (April 04, 2026) – A 48-year-old woman was among three people killed Saturday afternoon in a head-on crash involving two pickup trucks in Julian, authorities said.

Maria Del Carmen Contreras Albino was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the collision, which occurred at approximately 2:49 p.m. on westbound State Route 78, just west of Mastros Trailer Park Road.

Officials reported that the two trucks, driven by a 72-year-old and a 66-year-old man, collided head-on and overturned multiple times.

Albino was extricated from the wreckage but was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

FATAL HEAD-ON ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet identified contributing factors.

According to AAA, between 2015 and 2018, more than 2,000 fatalities occurred due to head-on collisions on divided highways. Driver error is the leading cause of such crashes, with common factors including impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, poor roadway design, inexperienced motorists, and driver confusion.

Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney, emphasized that in cases like this, it is critical to initiate an independent investigation promptly to preserve key evidence.

“An attorney can gather the necessary evidence to demonstrate whether a driver acted negligently, which often requires extensive resources,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Beyond the work of law enforcement, legal teams can re-interview witnesses, review surveillance footage, and obtain phone and texting records from the involved parties. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can help guide families through this difficult time while ensuring their rights are protected.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Maria Del Carmen Contreras Albino may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic accident.

“The emotional and financial impact of losing a loved one in a crash can be devastating,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal. “We understand the challenges families face, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will monitor the official investigation and help ensure that the family’s best interests are represented.”
